Books for Boys

Books for Boys

Boys do not achieve as well as girls in reading.
How can we involve boys in choosing books that will encourage them to read?
How can we create a situation where our boy’s voices and choices can be heard?
How can we encourage the pupil’s voice and involve them in governance of their schools?

The Equality and Diversity Shop’s aim is to actively promote equality and diversity in all its forms.

We believe we have put together a unique approach in encouraging boys to become involved in reading.

We have used the Government recommended list of books for boys, compiled with the Schools Library Association, added books from our own extensive experience of education and our reading consultant.

We have put them on our web site in a way which we believe will encourage boys, teachers and parents to select books that will appeal to them.

The 5+ picture books have male read audio files so that they can listen about the books and see larger images.

The 6-9+ and 6-11 ranges have male read audio files and web links so that they can listen about the books, hear some extracts and find out more about the books by following the computer game type approach and author web sites.

The older readers and 11-14 year olds have web links so that they can find out about the books and their authors.

The books become accessible to younger or poorer readers, children and parents for whom English is not their first language and children or parents who may have a special educational need.

All the links and audio files open in a new window/tab so that navigation in the web site is simple. The boys can either listen to the file only or follow the words at the same time by following the detailed instructions below.

Schools can use a selection of boys across ability and age groups to select books for their peers. Whole school or class selection is possible as any computer with internet access can be used.

Schools can send us in suggestions for books to be included via the contact us page and, if suitable, we will include that book and recognition of where the referral came from.

All our boy's books are discounted in price.
